The BMMA Mahila Shariah Adalat in Barrel Market, Ahmedabad

On 30th August 2013, BMMA formally inaugurated its Women’s Shariah Court in Barrel Market, Ahmedabad. Zakia Soman and Noorjehan Safia Niaz, Founders of BMMA inaugurated the Court. The Gujrat Convener of BMMA, Jamila Pathan along with her team urged women to come forward if they face any legal issues. Zakia Soman reiterated the need for women to come forward to form women-centric legal aid centres especially when Muslim women face the brunt of a discriminatory family law. She said that Muslim women have been deliberately kept away from her rights which have been given to her by the Quran. Dr. Noorjehan Safia Niaz said that since the state and the community leadership has failed Muslim women, the women themselves must now come forward to solve her own problems. The victims must now take the lead and bring changes in their own lives. BMMA believes that alternative structures and laws by Muslim women themselves is the only way out. Justice is as much a need of a poor women as are her other basic needs. BMMA will go ahead and fulfill this need in the years to come.
